Sierra Maestra
2010 Latin Grammy nominee, Sierra Maestra, is now celebrating 34 years since its formation. Sierra Maestra was the first of the modern-era groups to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar, one trumpet, bongo, güiro and vocals — as during the “golden age” of this style in the 1920s and ’30s. They have been the pioneers in reviving this genre for new generations and reintroducing it into the Cuban mainstream. They named themselves after the mountain range in the eastern part of Cuba as a tribute to the birthplace of son.
Sierra Maestra provides the link between the golden era of Cuban music and today’s Cuban scene. In a 30-year history they have kept the flame of *son* alive. Down the years Sierra Maestra have always mixed the classics of the Golden Age with newly written songs. As it happens it’s the new songs that have become their most popular.
*PRAISE FOR LATEST ALBUM SONANDO YA:*
"this is intoxicatingly rhythmic and gloriously romantic music, but they also have youth in the ranks now. This shines through on a largely contemporary range of material which wields a welcome capacity to surprise...it’s an ever-present sense of joy designed to put a smile on your face."
